NVDA functions Installing NVDA NVDA can be downloaded from the NVDA website, www.nvda-project.org. Please refer to the NVDA website resources for instructions on how to download and install NVDA on your computer. Turning on NVDA There are several ways to turn on NVDA on the computer. • Press Windows key + M to go to the desktop, then press N for NVDA, then Enter; or • Use Ctrl + Alt + N to start NVDA. After a few seconds NVDA will start. Defining the NVDA Key On a computer with a full-sized keyboard, the NVDA key generally refers to the Insert key. Windows Vista or Windows 7, Starting HJPad. Press the WINDOWS. The window might be in a restored state so activate the application control menu and make sure the program is maximized. Press ALT+DOWN ARROW to move to and read the next sentence, or ALT+UP ARROW to read the prior sentence. I was looking at a list of hotkeys for windows XP and saw the command to flip the screen upside down (Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow). The problem is. The problem is even though I read it was an XP command I tried it anyway on this system using Vista. Seems weird that the intel graphics program doesnt start.Missing. On a smaller keyboard such as a laptop, the Caps Lock key can be used. If you want to use the Caps Lock key, press Tab once on the dialogue box and check the check box by using the Space bar. The NVDA dialogue box will appear every time you start the program, unless you tell it not to by unchecking the second checkbox in the dialog. Turning off NVDA To turn off NVDA: • Press the Insert key or the Caps Lock key + Q, then NVDA will prompt you whether you would like to end the program or not. • Select Yes then Enter. Turning off your computer Windows 7 or Windows Vista: • Press the Windows key. • Right arrow once and the shut down option will appear. • Press Enter to shut down. Windows XP: • Shut down procedure different in windows xp. • Press windows key • Press letter 'U' twice If Windows does not shut down, use up and down arrows to select shut down. If all else fails, press the power button and hold it for 5 seconds. The computer will shut down. This should only be used as a last resort. Performing functions in Windows Assigning programs to the desktop To make things easier to find, shortcuts can be created on the desktop for a file or program. The programs in this manual should already be installed in Windows, but if you wish to use other programs they may need to be installed on your computer. Practice the following: • Press the Windows key and go to All Programs. • Right arrow, then go to accessories using the up and down navigation arrows. • Right arrow, then go to Wordpad by using the up and down navigation arrows. • While the focus is on Wordpad, press the Application key. • Go to the send option by using the up arrow. • Right arrow, and then go to the desktop by using the up and down navigation arrows. • Press Enter to create the shortcut. • Press Windows key + M to go to the desktop. • Press M until the focus is on Wordpad. • Press Enter to open Wordpad. Closing the file or application To close a file or application after working on it, do the following: 1. Verify the focus is on the file or open application by using NVDA + T 2. Close file by using ALT + F4 Minimising file or application Sometimes you need to minimise a file or application. To do this: • Make sure the focus is on the file or application. • Press Alt + Space Bar. • Select Minimize in the menu option. • Press Enter to minimize. Navigating on the computer screen The desktop consists of icons that you see on the computer screen. The task bar and notification tool bar are located at the bottom of the screen. To navigate around these screen elements, do the following: • Press Windows key + M to go to the desktop. • Press Tab once to put the focus on the task bar. • Press Tab again to put the focus on the notification tool bar. Creating folders Organising files in a separate folder makes things easier to find, especially if you are working with a lot of documents. To create a folder in My Documents: • Press the Windows key, then Tab once. • Arrow down once to My Documents, press Enter. • In the document folder, press Alt to open the menu option. • With down arrow, select New. • Right arrow to select folder. • Press Enter.
